ITALY’S “OTHER” WHITES

 It’s that stifling time of year when it becomes a bit daunting to face off with a big bold Cabernet or Syrah.  So you consider “going white”.  Traditionally that meant heading in the direction of Chardonnays, Sauvignon Blancs, and from Italy, Pinot Grigios.

But before you go there, have you taken a peek at our Italian white wine section lately?  You might be surprised to see the many different choices.  We offer exciting Italian whites from the northern tip, through the central regions, and all the way down to southern Italy, Sicily, and Sardinia. 

There are more than 3,000 “ REGISTERED “grape varieties in Italy and many say the actual number of different grape types is closer to an astounding 15,000. Of the many thousands of white varietals, some 17 to 20 comprise the key types.

From the northern reaches of Italy come the Trebbiano, Arneis, Chardonnay, Cortese,Tocai, Garganega, Moscato, and Pinot Bianco.  Heading south to Italy’s mid regions, you’ll run into Verdicchio, Frascati, Vernaccia, Falanghina, and Orvieto.  And finally, traveling the southern extremities you will discover Fiano and Greco; Grillo, Viognier, and Insolia from Sicily, and the tasty Vermentino from Sardinia.

Not only are tastes and flavors diverse, but pricing is reasonable throughout.  (Most  types fall into the $10  to $15  price range.)
