Another of our nearby bridges is the Corey Causeway, which is part of FL
693, connecting South Pasadena and St Pete Beach. During the 2007
Treasure Island Bridge construction phase when that bridge was closed, this
bridge took over most of the normal TI Bridge traffic.
The first Corey Causeway Bridge was opened in the late 1930s, around the same time as the original Treasure Island Bridge. The 1930s bridge span route was completely over the open water of Boca Ciega Bay, from the end of Corey Avenue to South Pasadena. This route is indicated by dotted lines on the US Geologic Survey map shown on the left. In the early 1960s a new high level drawbridge was constructed over a route that took it over the two Bay Islands, rather than completely open water. Note on the photo below that Deadman Key is gone. One presumes that it provided the "raw material" for creation of the Bay Islands. Further construction was completed in 1975.
