Pre-TI Bridge Ariel view of Sunset Inn and Park Street

Another piece of history adjacent to our neighborhood is the Sunset Inn, which has since been known by a number of names including Sunset Bay.  The Hotel, located at the intersection of Central Avenue and Park Street, overlooks Sunset Park and pre-dates the TI bridge, as shown on the photograph of the hotel and environs to the Left.  Stories from the community suggest the guest list that may have included Glen Miller, Marilyn Monroe, Babe Ruth and even Robert Kennedy.

As many of you are aware, the 90- year old hotel, currently know as the Parkview Hotel,  was purchased by a developer who had rehabilitated properties in other areas of the country.  These plans came to an end with the real estate bust.  Neglected, without building activity the hotel deteriorated and is now eyesore at the entrance to St Petersburg from Treasure Island.  The hotel is in foreclosure with the lender attempting to sell it.  Herb Polson, our St Petersburg Councilman, reported at the YCECA 2011 Annual Meeting that the fact that the hotel has been declared a historic building limits options for potential buyers.  It cannot be demolished.
