Island Time Readers Book Club
The Yacht Club Estates book group meets the third Tuesday of each month from 10 am until 12 noon. We now have 13 members who enjoy reading and sharing in lively discussion of the chosen book of the month. Club members take turns each month hosting the group and leading the discussion of the book they have selected. The discussion leader’s role is not difficult as there are many ideas and questions for book groups made available on the internet if one chooses to use them. The following is a list of hostesses and the book we will read in the coming months: Date Title Address Hostess Sept 20 War for the Oaks 7962 11th Ave S Barbara Smith Oct 18 A Reliable Wife 1242 79th Street S Bonnie Cannard Nov 15 The Immortal Life of 7973 10th Ave S Donna Skibo Henrietta Locks Dec 20 The Hunger Games 7980 9th Ave S Shannon Huet If you are the discussion leader I suggest Googling the title of your book followed by the words "book group guide" or "discussion guide" to find questions. The other option is to look on the publisher’s site for a guide to your book. Please join us if you can. If you are a returning member let the hostess know if you can’t attend. If you would like to come and have not attended before email Elaine Garofalo (elaine.garofalo@gmail.com) or 537-9830. Elaine Garofalo Sandy Stewart hosted the group on July 19 as we gathered to talk about one of the most highly anticipated novels of recent years: “Freedom” by Jonathan Franzen. Jonathan Franzen’s previous novel “The Corrections” won The National Book Award and spent twenty-nine weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. “Freedom” takes its title from the liberty and constraints of contemporary life. The book offers rich territory for discussion, ranging from the nature of love to the role of humanity in nature. The book group met again on August 23 at Elaine Garofalo’s home to share many diverse ideas and thoughts about “Water for Elephants” by Sara Gruen. Some of us also saw the recently released movie version of “Water for Elephants” and enjoyed comparing the film with the book. This book was especially relevant since many of us are familiar with circus history as a result of visiting the Ringling Museum in Sarasota. The August meeting was also a planning meeting during which members presented titles of books they felt worthy of being added to the club calendar. Barbara Smith chose “War for the Oaks” by Emma Bull as the book selection for September. The book tells the story of Eddi McCandry, a rock musician who finds herself unwillingly pulled into the supernatural faerie conflict between good and evil. HAPPY READING!
